The lore behind the legend
Pikachu became the face of Pokémon due to the anime — it was not intended to be the franchise mascot originally. Clefairy was the original choice for the anime protagonist's partner.
Pikachu has been the face of Pokémon since 1997. It has starred in over 1,200 anime episodes, 23 films, and countless games across three decades.
In 2019, Pikachu starred in the first live-action Pokémon film alongside Ryan Reynolds as the voice. The film grossed over $433 million worldwide.
Pikachu evolves from Pichu (Friendship) and into Raichu using a Thunder Stone. Ash famously refused to let his Pikachu evolve — a defining moment in Pokémon lore.
Pikachu has appeared in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon since 2001, been the subject of scientific papers, and even had a Japanese aircraft painted with its likeness.
A single Pikachu stores electricity in its cheek pouches. According to the Pokédex, it can deliver up to 100,000 volts — enough to cause a blackout when many gather together.
Every great trainer started somewhere. A small town, a first partner, and a whole world to explore. The bond between trainer and Pokémon is the heart of every adventure.
